Brad Shepik's Human Activity Suite; Elio Villafranca Quintet with special guest Brian Lynch; Chuchito Valdes Big Band; Chick Corea's Freedom Band: Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, Roy Haynes

Continuing and expanding the now illustrious tradition forged over the last sixteen Caramoor jazz festivals, Jazz Producer Jim Luce has crafted a three-day festival packed with jazz greats, new, innovative voices on the scene, and several surprises.

Returning after his superlative solo concert during Caramoor's inaugural fall festival last year, the visionary Chick Corea co-headlines this year's festival with his Freedom Band featuring Kenny Garrett, Christian McBride, and the equally legendary Roy Haynes with the final concert of the weekend. Saturday night's headline event is the World Vibraphone Summit with the legendary Bobby Hutcherson and his ensemble passing on the torch to the young Stefon Harris and his group Blackout. The consummate Mulgrew Miller-arguably the leading pianist of his generation-and his trio kick off the festival Friday with an evening of prowess and captivating elegance.

The afternoon sets capture the sheer breadth of global influences on the jazz scene today. On Saturday, Roswell Rudd brings his Trombone Tribe for a chameleon-like set of music with eclectic influences from down home to Kurt Weill to Eastern European gypsy brass music. The Brazilian Clarice Assad's versatility and sophistication as a pianist, vocalist, and composer ensures a deeply musical experience. A high-energy celebration of polyphonic rhythms, Spoken Hand Percussion Orchestra unifies four percussion batteries into one distinct voice: North Indian tabla, Afro Cuban bata, Brazilian samba, and West African djembe.

On Sunday, well-versed world traveler and guitarist Brad Shepik presents his Human Activity Suite-his most expansive and committed project to date-with Ralph Alessi, Gary Versace, Drew Gress, and Tom Rainey. Cuban pianist Elio Villafranca returns to Caramoor with special guest Brian Lynch. After his solo performance two years ago and his quartet set last summer, Cuban piano monster Chuchito Valdes returns with his Big Band performing the music of his grandfather Bebo Valdes-a central figure in the Golden Age of Cuban music.

Meerkats
A family of meerkats, one of Africa’s most entertaining species, will burrow into visitors’ hearts in this new special exhibit.

First popularized by the comical sidekick Timon in Disney’s “The Lion King,” and then celebrated in the Animal Planet television series “Meerkat Manor” (2005-2009), meerkats are members of the mongoose family that live in social “mobs” or “gangs” in burrows in the Kalahari Desert, in the southern African nations of Botswana and South Africa.

No mere cats, meerkats (Suricata suricatta) are fascinating for living in structured but cooperative societies, including a foraging strategy where adults take turns standing guard upright on their hind feet, watching for predators, while the others eat. As the popular “Meerkat Manor” television series showed, the family-based “mobs” are not lacking in daily drama – from internal relationship issues to battles with other “mobs” encroaching on their territory to the ever-present fear of jackals and eagles.

“These are active animals with very charismatic faces and highly interesting social structures, so they’ll be a lot of fun for visitors to watch,” said Jack Schneider, the Aquarium’s curator of animals.
The exhibit will feature six sibling meerkats – three males, three females – born in the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah. Their Maritime Aquarium habitat will offer windows into their underground burrows, so all meerkat activity will be within view. A viewing bubble will even let young visitors stand up right among the meerkats.

Almost like a good television sit-com generates new hit shows, the meerkat exhibit is the second big “spin-off” from The Maritime Aquarium’s major special exhibit, “Africa: From the Desert to the Sea.” The first – “African Penguins,” featuring a small colony of the comical birds native to South Africa – opened in February 2009 and helped the Aquarium to one of its biggest summers ever. “African Penguins” will be open through December 2010.

Dennis Miller 8/19 8 pm
Dennis Miller
It's been said that Miller is "One of the premiere comedy talents in America today..." While others are blunt assessing Miller's comedic stature, Dennis himself makes a virtue of understatement, but there is nothing low key about his career.

Miller is a five-time Emmy Award® winner for his critically acclaimed half-hour, live talk show "Dennis Miller Live" which had a nine year run on HBO. He also wrote and starred in the Emmy-nominated cable comedy special "Raw Feed", his sixth such special. He was the host and executive producer of CNBC's "Dennis Miller", a topical interview talk show featuring reasoned discourse, opinion and humor. Additionally, Miller has appeared on many politically oriented television talk shows.

He has also been cast in films, usually in dramatic roles, most notably in 1994's "Disclosure," 1995's "The Net," and 1996's "Murder at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."

Over the years, Miller has become both a public and critical favorite. The New York Times said, "Mr. Miller is exquisitely attuned to contemporary foibles...his material can be scathing, his delivery low key...Mr. Miller reaches a bit farther than most comedians for the scorching comment...this smart aleck has an uncommonly sharp eye..." and The Hollywood Reporter called his most recent special, "an hour of topical, scathing brilliance that helps cement Miller's status as the Lenny Bruce of the new millennium...the most cerebral, astute and clever standup ever to put mouth to microphone."

No Man's Land
No Man's Land

By Harold Pinter, Directed by Bonnie J. Monte
August 11 - 29
A dark masterpiece from one of the world's most important playwrights and winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize for Literature. It marks Ms. Monte's first return to the mysterious and haunting world of Pinter since her acclaimed production of The Homecoming in 1995. This disturbing and provocative piece offers up Pinter's biting wit and brilliant use of language at its best, as well as tour-de-force roles for the two main protagonists. The play contains adult content and is not appropriate for children.

All's Well That Ends Well
All's Well that ends Well

By William Shakespeare, Directed by Stephen Fried
September 15 - October 10
Not seen on The Shakespeare Theatre stage in more than a decade, this new vision of Shakespeare's mercurial romance features an ensemble cast of nine actors switching identities as the play moves from Rossillion to Paris to Florence and back again. Whether the love story ends well or not well is often a matter of debate, and that ambiguity is, in part, what has made the tale so compelling to audiences for over four centuries.

The Lion in WInter
The Lion in Winter

By James Goldman, Directed by Paul Mullins
October 20 - November 14
This wickedly biting "domestic comedy" of a dysfunctional family dynasty in the year 1183 was nominated for two Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 1966, and later was made into an Academy Award winning film. Few families can boast a more ferocious power struggle than that of the Plantagenet family. Here the battlefield is a psychological one where the weapons of choice are sharp-edged words, acerbic humor, and emotional grenades packed with the bitter shrapnel of the past.

I Capture the Castle
I Capture the Castle

By Dodie Smith, Directed by Cameron Watson
December 1, 2010 - January 2, 2011
A very special holiday gift arrives with the American East Coast premiere of this captivating, romantic comedy, which has been a beloved mainstay of the British stage since it was first produced. This 1930's coming-of-age classic is perfect for family audiences and is chock full of colorful Bohemian characters, wit, wisdom, a fabulous crumbling castle, and a strong dose of love.

Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum

The Zimmerli Art Museum’s permanent collection comprises more than 60,000 works, ranging from ancient to contemporary art and featuring particularly rich holdings in the areas of French art of the 19th century, Russian and Soviet Nonconformist Art, and works on paper, including prints, rare books, drawings, photographs, and original illustrations for children’s books.

Water September 1, 2010 – January 2, 2011. Water explores the force of nature as element, purifier, place, allegory, and spectacle. Ranging from a 17th century Chinese landscape to Bill Viola’s visceral video work, Ablutions (2005), works will be drawn from the museum’s own collection of French, American, Russian and Soviet Nonconformist art, photographs, prints, and children’s book illustrations, as well as from other public and private collections.

Featured in the exhibition are more than 90 works of art spanning cultures and a variety of media. Highlights from the Zimmerli’s collection include John Kensett’s lapidary View of the Shrewsbury River, New Jersey (1859); Milton Avery’s serene Inner Harbor (1945); other works include Haitian artist Amena Simeon’s brightly beaded flags portraying Mami Wata (a Divinity of the water) (2000); a rare Yoruban ritual vessel; Lynn Davis’s magisterial selenium toned photograph Iceberg II, Disko Bay, Greenland (2004) and Atul Bhalla’s 20-part photographic installation grid of New Delhi’s historic public water spigots, Piaus (2006).

Edward Ruscha’s Sea of Desire (1983), a three-color etching and aquatint, Geoffrey Hendricks’s Waiting (1998), a performance work in which a watercolor is immersed in water, Maya Lin’s Dew Point (2004), a floor installation of glass orbs, and Wangechi Matu’s video piece Amazing Grace (2005) are among the contemporary works featured.

“Water is an issue of great importance today in the sciences and the humanities,” says Dr. Gustafson, Mellon Liaison for Academic Programs and Curator at the Zimmerli. “Biologists have studied water as the source of life, and have recently been investigating how measurable climate shifts will affect life on our planet. Too much water or too little water are threats to human civilization and to many land-based life-forms.”

To provide information about water in a global context, the museum will create a resource room including internet hook ups to international online sites that discuss issues relevant to the study of water as a global issue.

The Zimmerli will produce an interdisciplinary cell-phone audio guide for the exhibition with descriptions and comments by artists, art historians, biologists, ecologists, geographers, and poets who will discuss individual works of art from their own perspectives. Many of the participants are faculty at Rutgers whose research or interests include water and the ways in which cultures incorporate water into their systems.
